How It Started

From Volunteering to Expertise

It started in 2008 with the Cork Active Retirement Association. I was volunteering, helping older adults get outdoors, and I noticed something troubling — there were almost no properly documented walking routes designed with seniors in mind. Most guides either ignored accessibility entirely or treated older walkers like they were fragile. That didn't sit right with me.

I decided to study it properly. Graduated from University College Cork's Geography department in 2012 with a focus on recreational geography and accessibility. Then came the real work — systematically walking and documenting over 60 coastal and lowland trails across Munster, paying attention to what actually matters: terrain difficulty, rest points, water access, bathroom facilities, and places where the views make the effort worthwhile.

The Ballycotton Cliff Walk became my obsession. Those dramatic cliffs, the coastal views, the challenge of the terrain — I spent years refining the route, identifying the best rest spots, understanding exactly where older bodies need support. It's not just about knowing the path. It's about knowing what it feels like to walk it when your knees aren't what they used to be, when you need a safe place to catch your breath, when you want genuine beauty without unnecessary risk.

My work's been featured in the Irish Times travel section, and I've consulted with Cork County Council on accessibility improvements. But honestly, the best part is getting messages from people who say they thought their hiking days were behind them — and now they're exploring Ireland's coast again.

My Approach

Why Age Shouldn't Limit Adventure

I work from a simple conviction: age shouldn't limit access to Ireland's natural beauty. That's not just something I believe — it's what drives every guide I write and every route I document.

Most hiking guides treat older adults like they're either invisible or fragile. They don't. You're not. What you need is honesty about what a route actually demands, realistic timing that doesn't pretend you'll move like a 25-year-old, and genuine information about rest points and accessibility. That's what I provide.

The Ballycotton Cliff Walk is a perfect example. It's dramatic, challenging, and genuinely one of Cork's best coastal experiences. But it demands respect — careful footwork on rocky terrain, real elevation changes, sections with no shelter. I don't shy away from that. I describe it honestly, which is exactly what older walkers need. They're not looking for easy routes that bore them. They're looking for real experiences they can handle safely.

Every guide gets meticulous attention to detail. Terrain difficulty. Elevation profiles. Rest points with actual descriptions so you know what you're getting. Practical considerations — bathrooms, water access, where you can sit if your knees need a break. The small things that make the difference between a walk you enjoy and one that leaves you exhausted and regretting it.

Honesty

No sugar-coating difficulty levels or hiding challenging sections. You get realistic information to make confident decisions.

Detail

Meticulous attention to what matters — rest spots, terrain conditions, realistic timing, accessibility features that actually exist.

Respect

Recognition that older bodies have different needs and capabilities. That's not a limitation — it's just reality, and it deserves respect in how I present routes.

Access

Belief that everyone deserves to experience Ireland's coastal beauty. That means making information clear, accessible, and genuinely useful.
